Where to go in June and July 2027 to avoid sargassum
Sargassum season in the Mexican Caribbean peaks from May through August, so the surest way to a seaweed-free beach in June or July 2027 is to cross to Mexico's Pacific coast. Inside the Caribbean, sheltered west- and north-facing beaches on Aruba, Grand Cayman, Isla Mujeres and Cozumel carry the best odds.
Where sargassum hits hardest in summer
Sargassum is a floating brown seaweed that drifts out of the tropical Atlantic and lands on Caribbean beaches from spring through fall. In Mexico, the open Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo takes the brunt: on May 18, 2026, the state's monitoring center counted 31 affected beaches on the south coast, most of them around Mahahual, while Isla Mujeres and Cozumel collected some of the smallest totals in the state. Elsewhere, USF's 2026 bulletins reported major beaching around the Caribbean and Lesser Antilles islands and along Florida's southeast coast.
Two things decide whether a beach stays clear. The first is which ocean it's on: sargassum stays in the Atlantic basin, so Mexico's Pacific coast doesn't get it. The second, if you're in the Caribbean, is which way the beach faces. Easterly trade winds push the seaweed onto east-facing shores, while sheltered, west- and north-facing beaches catch far less.
Sargassum in June and July, at a glance
Which month is worse changes from year to year: in 2026 the Atlantic total fell from 33.6 million metric tons in June to 25.5 million in July, and in 2025 it ran the other way. Here's how each coast compares.

Methodology in brief
We ranked each resort against five criteria, weighting sargassum exposure most heavily. Every factual claim below (room counts, opening years, named awards) is checkable against the property or a reputable third party.
Criterion | What it captures |
Sargassum exposure | The heart of the ranking: whether the coast gets Atlantic sargassum at all, and if it does, how sheltered the beach is from the easterly trade winds. |
Swimmable water | Whether the water in front of the resort is calm enough to swim in summer, or whether guests rely on pools. |
Summer weather | Heat, rain and storm patterns on each coast in June and July. |
Acclaim | Independent recognition: MICHELIN Keys, AAA Five Diamond, Condé Nast Traveler lists and eco-certifications. |
Rooms & setting | The room product, privacy and what's on site for the days off the beach. |
Punta Mita and Riviera Nayarit (Pacific): no sargassum
Punta Mita sits at the northern tip of Bahía de Banderas on Mexico's Pacific coast, about 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta International Airport. Atlantic sargassum doesn't reach the Pacific, so the risk here is zero in June and July. Summers are hot, and afternoon storms come more often in July than in June.
1. Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort: Best adults-only escape with zero sargassum risk
Location: A private peninsula in Punta Mita, Riviera Nayarit, at the northern tip of Bahía de Banderas, about 45 minutes by car from Puerto Vallarta International Airport.
Why We Love It: It faces the Pacific, so Atlantic sargassum never reaches it, and with 15 tented bungalows and no more than 30 guests at a time, it's the smallest resort on this list.
Amenities: A private plunge pool in every tent, an all-inclusive rate, temazcal ceremonies in the House of Heat, nocturnal forest bathing, cliffside yoga and two standalone spa pods.
What to Consider: La Solana, its own beach, is rocky and best for strolling and sunbathing, so swimming happens at Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita's beaches, five minutes away. July is also wetter than June, with frequent afternoon storms.
Overview: Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort
Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort opened in December 2022 on 48 forested acres of the Punta Mita peninsula. It's adults-only and all-inclusive, and the rate covers all food and drinks, daily rituals, select experiences and one 90-minute spa journey per guest per stay. Most of the programming centers on wellness, from temazcal ceremonies to nocturnal forest bathing. For swimming, Naviva guests have full access to the two beaches at Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita. In summer the highs sit around 90°F and the sea warms to 82°F to 84°F. Condé Nast Traveler put Naviva on its 2023 Hot List of best new hotels and gave it its 2026 Triple Crown.

2. Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita: Best for families with zero sargassum risk
Location: The same Punta Mita peninsula in Riviera Nayarit, five minutes from Naviva and about 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta International Airport.
Why We Love It: It's on the Pacific, so there's no sargassum, and its beaches face the calm water of the bay, so swimming is easy in summer.
Amenities: Two Jack Nicklaus golf courses, Pacífico and Bahía, the Kids For All Seasons club, the KidsWell program, Babies For All Seasons and a range of villas.
What to Consider: June and July are hot, and afternoon storms pick up through July. Pacífico's Tail of the Whale hole can only be played at low tide.
Overview: Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita
Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita opened in 1999 and has 177 rooms and suites, plus villas, across 52 acres. Its beaches sit on the bay side of the peninsula, so swimming is easy in summer. Golfers get two Jack Nicklaus courses, and Pacífico's optional 3B hole, the Tail of the Whale, plays to a natural island green. Children have the Kids For All Seasons club, with art and Huichol cultural activities, while the complimentary KidsWell program adds breathwork, meditation and other mindfulness activities for ages five to 12. In 2025 the resort added Babies For All Seasons for guests up to 18 months.
Highlights: Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita

Los Cabos (Pacific and Sea of Cortez): no sargassum
Los Cabos sits at the tip of the Baja California peninsula, between the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez, out of reach of Atlantic sargassum. June is hot and dry, July brings a little more rain, and both months fall in the eastern Pacific hurricane season, which runs from May 15 to November 30. Much of the coast takes open Pacific swell, so it's worth picking a hotel with a swimmable beach or a good pool.
3. One&Only Palmilla: Best for butler service on a swimmable beach
Location: Palmilla Beach near San José del Cabo, Los Cabos, facing the Sea of Cortez.
Why We Love It: It's on one of the region's few swimmable beaches, and every room comes with a butler.
Amenities: Butler service for every room, suite and villa, on the calmer Sea of Cortez side of the Cabo corridor.
What to Consider: It's at the San José del Cabo end of the corridor, so Cabo San Lucas and its marina are a drive away.
Overview: One&Only Palmilla
One&Only Palmilla sits on Palmilla Beach near San José del Cabo, facing the Sea of Cortez. Each of its 173 rooms, suites and villas comes with butler service. Much of the Cabo coast takes open Pacific swell and isn't safe for swimming, but Palmilla's stretch, on the calmer corridor, is. The MICHELIN Guide has awarded it two Keys since 2024.
Highlights: One&Only Palmilla
Zero sargassum risk
Swimmable Sea of Cortez beach
Butler service in every room
Two MICHELIN Keys (since 2024)

4. Montage Los Cabos: Best for swimming and snorkeling on Santa Maria Bay
Location: 39 acres on Santa Maria Bay, off Km 12.5 of the highway between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, about 40 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport.
Why We Love It: Santa Maria Bay is a protected marine sanctuary, and the beach in front of the resort is swimmable and holds Blue Flag certification, which is rare on this coast.
Amenities: Many rooms and suites with private plunge pools, the 40,000-square-foot Spa Montage, three pools including an adults-only infinity pool (plus an adults-only serenity pool in the spa), the Paintbox kids club for ages five to 12, and snorkeling, paddleboarding and guided scuba in the bay.
What to Consider: The transfer from the airport takes about 40 minutes, and the 52 Montage Residences share the grounds with the hotel.
Overview: Montage Los Cabos
Montage Los Cabos opened in 2018 on Santa Maria Bay as the brand's first property outside the US. It has 122 guestrooms, suites and casas, plus 52 Montage Residences. The bay is a protected marine sanctuary, and guests can swim, snorkel, paddleboard and dive on its reef straight from the beach. The MICHELIN Guide awarded it two Keys in 2024 and again in 2025, and Forbes Travel Guide rates both the hotel and Spa Montage Five-Star.
Highlights: Montage Los Cabos

5. Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal: Best for private plunge pools in Los Cabos
Location: The Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas, reached through a private tunnel cut through Pedregal Mountain, a short walk from the Cabo marina.
Why We Love It: There's no sargassum on this coast, and every room, suite, casita and villa has its own plunge pool and terrace for the hottest part of the day.
Amenities: A private plunge pool and terrace in all 112 accommodations, two main pools and a private tunnel entrance.
What to Consider: The resort advises against swimming at its own beach because of strong currents, so ocean swimming means a five-minute taxi to Médano Beach.
Overview: Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal
Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal sits on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas and became a Waldorf Astoria in 2019. Each of its 112 rooms, suites, casitas and villas has a private plunge pool and terrace. The resort advises against swimming at its own beach because of strong currents, so guests swim in its two main pools or take a five-minute taxi to Médano Beach.
Highlights: Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal
Zero sargassum risk
Private plunge pool in every accommodation
Reached through a private tunnel
Short walk to the Cabo marina
112 rooms, suites, casitas and villas
Aruba (southern Caribbean): low risk
Aruba sits off the coast of Venezuela, at the southern edge of the Caribbean and outside the main Atlantic hurricane belt. It still gets some sargassum, but its west-side beaches, Eagle Beach and Palm Beach, are the island's clearest and see far less than Mexico's Caribbean coast. Summers are dry and windy.
6. Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort: Best Caribbean beach for June and July
Location: Eagle Beach, on the west side of Aruba, off the coast of Venezuela.
Why We Love It: It's directly on Eagle Beach, on the island's clearer west side, and it's adults-only.
Amenities: An adults-only resort of 104 rooms directly on Eagle Beach.
What to Consider: Aruba still gets some sargassum, just far less than the Mexican Caribbean, and it's one of two picks here outside Mexico.
Overview: Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort
Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort is an adults-only resort of 104 rooms on Eagle Beach. It holds Green Globe Platinum and LEED Gold certifications and has been certified CarbonNeutral since 2018. Of the Caribbean options here, Aruba is the most dependable for June and July, because its west-side beaches, Eagle Beach and Palm Beach, are the island's clearest.
Highlights: Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort
Lowest sargassum risk of the Caribbean picks
Adults-only, 104 rooms
Directly on Eagle Beach
Green Globe Platinum and LEED Gold
South of the main Atlantic hurricane belt
Grand Cayman (western Caribbean): low to moderate risk
Seven Mile Beach runs along Grand Cayman's sheltered western side, out of the easterly trade winds that push sargassum onto the island's eastern and southern shores. When the Cayman Compass checked the coast at the end of July 2026, it found heavy build-ups on the eastern, southern and northern coasts, while Seven Mile Beach and the George Town waterfront were clear. Unusual weather can still bring seaweed in, so the odds are good, but there's no guarantee.
7. The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa: Best for a sheltered stretch of Seven Mile Beach
Location: Directly on Seven Mile Beach, on Grand Cayman's west coast.
Why We Love It: The beach sits on the leeward side of the island, and it stayed clear in summer 2026 while sargassum piled up on Grand Cayman's other coasts.
Amenities: A freshwater pool beside the beach with a swim-up bar and cabanas, the Hibiscus Spa and seven restaurants, including Beach House.
What to Consider: Seven Mile Beach is public and can get busy. The resort says it'll reschedule or cancel a booking without penalty if a hurricane hits Grand Cayman.
Overview: The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa
The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa sits on Seven Mile Beach, the public stretch of sand along the island's western end. The resort has a freshwater pool beside the beach with a swim-up bar, the 7,000-square-foot Hibiscus Spa with 13 treatment rooms, and seven restaurants, among them Beach House. The Cayman Compass's late-July check found the beach clear while sargassum hit the island's other shores.
Highlights: The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa
Sheltered, west-facing beach

Hibiscus Spa, 13 treatment rooms
Seven restaurants
No-penalty hurricane rebooking
Isla Mujeres (Mexican Caribbean): low to moderate risk
Isla Mujeres is about 20 minutes by ferry from Cancún's Puerto Juárez terminal. Its west- and northwest-facing beaches are shielded from the easterly trade winds, and it collected some of the smallest sargassum totals in Quintana Roo in 2026, so it often stays clear when Tulum and Playa del Carmen are covered.
8. Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets: Best all-inclusive on a sheltered island
Location: The southern tip of Isla Mujeres, near the Ixchel temple at Punta Sur, looking across the water to Cancún, about 20 minutes by ferry from Cancún's Puerto Juárez terminal.
Why We Love It: It faces Cancún across the water rather than the open sea, and it holds the AAA Five Diamond rating.
Amenities: Adults-only and all-inclusive, with 123 oceanfront suites.
What to Consider: The island isn't immune: in June 2025, more than 130 tons of sargassum were removed from one stretch of Playa Norte, and the resort sits away from Playa Norte, on the southern tip.
Overview: Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets
Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets sits on the island's southern tip, near the Ixchel temple, with 123 oceanfront suites. It's adults-only and all-inclusive, and in January 2026 it earned the AAA Five Diamond rating, which local officials described as a first for the island.
Highlights: Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets
Lower sargassum odds than the Riviera Maya mainland
Adults-only, all-inclusive
123 oceanfront suites
AAA Five Diamond (January 2026)
20 minutes by ferry from Cancún
9. Privilege Aluxes: Best for walking to Playa Norte
Location: The northern tip of Isla Mujeres, at the town end of the island, across a small road from Playa Norte.
Why We Love It: Playa Norte faces west across the Bahía de Mujeres, away from the open Caribbean, and the hotel's own beach club sits on the sand across the road.
Amenities: Breakfast in every rate with an optional all-inclusive package, two heated pools, three Jacuzzis, Spa Mystique, the Playa Norte Beach Club and private rooftop pools in three suite types.
What to Consider: It's an in-town hotel with the beach across the road, the adults-only policy starts at age 14, and Playa Norte still sees light sargassum on some days.
Overview: Privilege Aluxes
Privilege Aluxes sits at the northern tip of Isla Mujeres, across a small road from Playa Norte, where its beach club has palapas and loungers for guests. It's adults-only from age 14, every rate includes breakfast, and guests can add an all-inclusive package. The hotel has two heated outdoor pools, four places to eat and drink, and three suite types with private rooftop pools. Oyster named it as its Isla Mujeres pick in its July 2026 guide to avoiding sargassum.
Highlights: Privilege Aluxes
Across the road from west-facing Playa Norte
Adults-only (14 and over)
Beach club on Playa Norte
Private rooftop pools in select suites
Optional all-inclusive
Frequently asked questions
What are the best luxury resorts to avoid sargassum in summer 2027?
On the Pacific, where Atlantic sargassum doesn't reach, the standouts are Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort (adults-only) and Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita (families) in Punta Mita, plus One&Only Palmilla, Montage Los Cabos and Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal in Los Cabos. In the Caribbean, the best odds are at Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort in Aruba, The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa, and Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets and Privilege Aluxes on Isla Mujeres.
Where can I go in Mexico in summer to avoid sargassum?
Mexico's Pacific coast, including Punta Mita, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, doesn't get Atlantic sargassum. On the Caribbean side, Isla Mujeres' Playa Norte, Cozumel's west coast and Playa Mujeres north of Cancún usually see less seaweed than Tulum or Playa del Carmen.
When is sargassum season in Cancún?
Sargassum season in Cancún usually runs from about April through October, with the heaviest landings from May through August, though the 2026 season started in January. As of late July 2026, Cancún had collected the second-most sargassum of any Quintana Roo municipality, after Playa del Carmen. The Hotel Zone's north-facing, more sheltered stretch and Playa Mujeres, which faces Isla Mujeres, usually see less seaweed than the east-facing beaches, which don't have the same shelter from the open sea.
Will 2027 be a bad year for sargassum in Mexico?
No forecast reaches as far as summer 2027 yet; USF's first firm read usually comes in its December bulletin, published in early January. Recent seasons point to another heavy year: annual records fell in 2018, 2022 and 2025, and USF expects 2026 to finish second.
Is June or July worse for sargassum in Cancún and the Riviera Maya?
Both fall inside the May to August peak, and there's no fixed answer to which is worse: it changes from year to year. In 2026 the Atlantic total fell from 33.6 million metric tons in June to 25.5 million in July; in 2025, July was heavier than June.
Where should I go for the 4th of July to avoid seaweed?
Mexico's Pacific coast is the safe choice for the July 4th week, because it doesn't get Atlantic sargassum. In Punta Mita, about 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta's airport, Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort is an adults-only, all-inclusive option, and Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita is a family resort with a swimmable beach. In the Caribbean, Aruba's Eagle Beach and Palm Beach generally get much less sargassum than Mexico's Caribbean coast.
Does Aruba get sargassum?
Some, but far less than Mexico's Caribbean coast. Aruba sits at the southern edge of the Caribbean, and its west-side beaches, Eagle Beach and Palm Beach, are the island's clearest, which is why it's the most dependable Caribbean option for June and July.
Does Puerto Vallarta or Punta Mita get sargassum?
No. The sargassum that reaches Mexico comes from the Atlantic and stays in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico; it doesn't reach Bahía de Banderas, where Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita sit on the Pacific.
How can I check sargassum before I travel?
USF's December bulletin, out in early January, gives the first firm read on how big the season will be. A week out, beach-by-beach maps and webcams give a better read, and on the morning itself the hotel's own photos are the most reliable source. A beach that's clear in the morning can be covered by the afternoon if the wind turns, so refundable rates are worth the small premium for a beach-first trip to Quintana Roo.
