Where to stay in and near Sayulita for a surf trip
Sayulita is a surf town on the Riviera Nayarit coast, about 38 km north of Puerto Vallarta's airport. Its main beach has a sand-bottom break where every surf school in town teaches, and there are reef and point breaks within a short drive in both directions, from San Pancho in the north to the Punta Mita peninsula in the south.
Where you sleep decides which waves are closest. Hotels on Sayulita's main beach put you on the learning break and in town for dinner. Resorts on the Punta Mita peninsula, 20 to 30 minutes south, sit near gentler longboard waves and run their own lessons and boat trips to the breaks.
The six resorts below are all on or right beside a beach. They're ranked on how easily a surfer gets from the room to a wave, what each one arranges for surfers, and how well it suits a trip where not everyone in the group surfs.

1. La Puesta Sayulita: best for surfing in town
La Puesta Sayulita sits at the north end of Sayulita's main beach, on 190 feet of sand. All 37 rooms face the ocean, and the walk from the room to the water is about 25 steps.
For a surfer, the location is the point. The town's beach break and its river-mouth points are a walk along the sand, so you can check the waves from your terrace, paddle out early before the schools arrive and be back for breakfast. Surf schools are a short walk away.
Best for: Surfers who want to walk to Sayulita's waves and restaurants.
Good to know: It's about half a mile from the main plaza.
2. Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita: best resort base for a surf trip
Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita is a 177-room resort on a private peninsula about 20 to 30 minutes south of Sayulita, with villas and residences alongside its casita-style rooms. It opened in 1999 and holds a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating for 2026 and two MICHELIN Keys in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Mexico.
Surfing runs through the resort's Tropicsurf center. It keeps a quiver of Firewire boards (shortboards, fish, hybrids and longboards) that guests can reserve ahead, and its coaches start beginners and families on the house wave off the resort beach. Manzanillas Beach has gentle waves suited to swimming and surf lessons. Twice a day, a panga takes surfers to nearby breaks including El Anclote, a long right suited to longboards, La Lancha and The Cove. Tropicsurf names the northwest swells that arrive from late October as the start of the best season here.
The rest of the resort covers the people in your group who don't surf. There are two swimmable beaches, two Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses (one of them, the Pacífico Signature course, has a natural island green known as the Tail of the Whale), the Apuane Spa and the Kids For All Seasons kids' club. Sayulita is close enough for a session at the beach break or dinner in town.
Best for: Families and groups of mixed ability who want lessons, boards and boat trips arranged on site.
Good to know: Surf season on the peninsula runs from late October into spring, which is also humpback whale season in Banderas Bay.
3. Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort: best adults-only base
Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort is a separate, adults-only and all-inclusive resort on the same peninsula. It has 15 tented bungalows on 48 acres of forest, each with a private plunge pool and terrace, and no more than 30 guests at a time. It's on Condé Nast Traveler's 2026 Gold List.
Naviva has its own beach, La Solana, and builds its days around the water and the forest: hiking and biking trails, yoga and breathwork, and a three-day free-diving breathwork program that leads to PADI free-diving certification. Guests also have access to the restaurants and fitness facilities at Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, a short stroll or golf-cart ride away.
The rate covers meals and drinks, including premium wines and spirits, plus a 90-minute spa journey, so there's nothing to arrange between sessions. Dinner is at Copal, a 30-seat wood-fire kitchen with no set menu.
Best for: Couples who want a quiet, all-inclusive base on the Punta Mita peninsula.
Good to know: Naviva welcomes guests aged 16 and over.
4. Susurros del Corazón: best for lessons on the resort beach
Susurros del Corazón, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, opened in November 2022 on about 1,850 feet of beach at Punta de Mita. Lessons happen on the resort's own beach, where the water on the left suits beginners and the right suits more advanced surfers, and experienced surfers can book boat trips to other breaks with a local pro. La Lancha is about a kilometer away.
Best for: Surfers who want to learn without leaving the resort.
Good to know: It's about 25 minutes from Sayulita by car.
5. Playa Escondida: best secluded base
Playa Escondida is a hotel of 32 rooms, casitas and villas on its own small cove about 10 minutes from Sayulita. The hotel arranges surf lessons and board rental for the breaks nearby.
Best for: Surfers who'd rather drive to the waves and come back to a quiet cove.
Good to know: You'll need transport to the breaks at Sayulita or San Pancho, and paths around the property include a lot of steps.
6. Villa Amor: best for villa stays
Villa Amor is a group of one- to three-bedroom villas on the hillside at the south end of Sayulita, some with full kitchens, plus a bistro and bar on the beach. Playa de los Muertos is about a five-minute walk, and the Punta Sayulita reef sits at this end of town. It doesn't run surf services, so guests book lessons with a school on the main beach.
Best for: Groups who want space and a kitchen within walking distance of town.
Good to know: Some villas are reached by steep stairs.
The surf breaks in and around Sayulita
Sayulita's beach break. In front of the fishing boats, the main beach has a sandy bottom and slow waves. This is where the surf schools teach, and it gets busy by mid-morning.
The right and the left. Near the river mouth, Sayulita's right is the town's main wave, at its best on bigger north swells and suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. It gets crowded. The left only works on bigger swells.
San Pancho. About 15 minutes north, San Pancho is a reef and point left for intermediate and advanced surfers, at its best in summer.
Punta de Mita. On the peninsula, El Anclote and Stinky's are slow rights suited to beginners and longboards, La Lancha has a gentle inside wave and a wedge farther out, and Burros, La Bahía and El Faro are reef waves for experienced surfers, with La Bahía reached only by boat.
