Where to spend winter 2026-27 in North America
North America gives winter travelers two very different trips within a few hours' flight of each other: dry-season sun on the beaches of Mexico, the Caribbean and Hawaii, or fresh snow in the Rockies, the Wasatch and the Coast Mountains.
Timing matters for both. The Atlantic hurricane season ends on November 30, and Caribbean high season runs from about mid-December to mid-April. On the slopes, Lake Louise plans to open in early November, Whistler Blackcomb on November 20, Aspen Mountain on November 26 and Deer Valley on December 5.
The 11 resorts below are split into beach and warm-weather resorts first, then ski lodges, and labeled by country. Each was chosen on winter conditions, independent ratings (Forbes Travel Guide, the MICHELIN Guide's Keys for hotels, Condé Nast Traveler) and what it does with the season, from whale watching to ski valets.

Beach and warm-weather winter resorts
From December to March, the Pacific coast of Mexico, the Caribbean and Hawaii are in their dry or mild seasons, with warm seas and humpback whales in residence on both Mexico's Pacific coast and Hawaii.
1. Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita (Mexico)
Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita is a 177-room resort on a private peninsula on Mexico's Riviera Nayarit coast, about 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta's airport, with villas and residences alongside its casita-style rooms. It holds a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating for 2026 and two MICHELIN Keys in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Mexico.
Winter is dry season here. From December to March, highs sit around 84°F with only a day or two of rain a month, and humpback whales arrive in Banderas Bay to mate and calve. They can be seen from shore, and the resort runs private two-hour whale-watching trips with hydrophones. Northwest swells bring surf from late October, and the on-site Tropicsurf center coaches beginners on the house wave and runs boat trips to nearby breaks.
Golfers get two Jack Nicklaus-designed courses, including the Pacífico Signature course and its natural island green, the Tail of the Whale. Families get two swimmable beaches, the Kids For All Seasons kids' club and a teen lounge for ages 13 to 19. Dinner can be contemporary Mexican at Dos Catrinas, Asian at Aramara or fish grilled zarandeado-style at Bahía, all three recognized by Wine Spectator in 2026.
Best for: Families, golfers and multi-generational groups who want reliable sun over the holidays.
Winter highlight: Whale watching from December to March, from shore or on a private boat.
2. Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort (Mexico)
Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort is a separate, adults-only and all-inclusive resort on the same peninsula, with 15 tented bungalows set on 48 acres of forest. Each has a private plunge pool, and no more than 30 guests stay at a time. Naviva is on Condé Nast Traveler's 2026 Gold List and was named in the magazine's inaugural Triple Crown awards in 2026.
Its winter calendar is a reason to go. The Season of Gathering program runs from Thanksgiving through New Year with festive meals, daily experiences and a spa journey, and older children aged 16 and over can join. On December 18 to 20, 2026 and March 5 to 7, 2027, Naviva's resident marine biologist leads whale weekends with boat trips, a talk and whale-watching yoga, included in the rate.
The rate covers meals and drinks, including premium wines and spirits, a 90-minute spa journey and select experiences such as guided hikes and breathwork. The spa also has a temazcal, a traditional Mexican sweat lodge, where ceremonies are led by a curandero (traditional healer).
Best for: Couples who want a private, all-inclusive winter escape.
Winter highlight: The Season of Gathering holiday program and the December whale weekend.
3. Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort (Mexico)
Las Ventanas al Paraíso sits on the Sea of Cortez between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, with 84 suites, villas and residences and eight pool areas. It holds two MICHELIN Keys and ranked No. 25 on The World's 50 Best Hotels 2026. The Tequila and Ceviche Bar stocks more than 150 tequilas.
Best for: Couples who want dry desert sun and a strong pool scene.
Good to know: The sea in front of the resort is too rough for swimming, so guests use the pools or take trips to calmer bays.
4. Jumby Bay Island (Caribbean)
Jumby Bay is a car-free private island of 300 acres off Antigua, reached by a 10-minute boat ride. It's all-inclusive, with three pools and dinners at the Estate House, an 1830s manor. From December to April, Antigua is in its dry season, with the sea at about 79°F to 81°F.
Best for: Couples and families who want a private island with everything included.
Good to know: Arrival is by boat only, and dining options off the island are limited.
5. Rosewood Little Dix Bay (Caribbean)
Rosewood Little Dix Bay is on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. In 2026 it received one MICHELIN Key and Condé Nast Traveler's Triple Crown, and it's on the Travel + Leisure 500. Its restaurants include Reef House and Sugar Mill.
Best for: Travelers who want a quieter Caribbean island.
Good to know: There are no nonstop flights from the US mainland to Virgin Gorda, so plan for a connection and a short boat or flight.
6. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai (United States)
Four Seasons Resort Hualalai has 249 bungalow-style rooms on 865 acres of the Kona-Kohala coast of Hawaii Island, 10 to 15 minutes from Kona airport. It holds a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating for the 17th year in 2026. King's Pond, a 1.8-million-gallon swimmable aquarium carved from lava rock, holds about 4,000 tropical fish, and humpback whales are off the coast from November to May, peaking January to March.
Best for: Travelers who want warm water without leaving the US.
Good to know: Much of the coast is lava rock, so the best swimming is in the protected areas and King's Pond.
Ski lodges
In the mountains, the ski season runs from November into April or May. The four lodges below sit at or near the base of major resorts in Canada and the US.
7. Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler (Canada)
Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler has 273 rooms and suites a few minutes' walk from the Blackcomb base, and its ski concierge carries guests' skis and boards to the base and back. Whistler Blackcomb plans to open on November 20, 2026, with 8,171 acres of terrain and an average of 422 inches of snow a year. In 2026 the hotel kept its two MICHELIN Keys and won Condé Nast Traveler's Triple Crown.
Best for: Skiers who want the 8,171 acres of Whistler Blackcomb and a full-service hotel.
Good to know: It isn't ski-in, ski-out; the concierge and a free shuttle cover the short trip to the lifts.
8. Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise (Canada)
Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, in Banff National Park, has 539 rooms on the shore of Lake Louise. A C$130 million investment in its rooms, suites and spa was completed in September 2025 with the opening of BASIN Glacial Waters, a Nordic-style thermal spa. Lake Louise Ski Resort, a shuttle ride away, plans to run from early November to May 2, 2027.
Best for: Skiers who want mountain scenery and a thermal spa after the slopes.
Good to know: It's a large hotel, and you'll take a shuttle to the lifts.
9. The Little Nell (United States)
The Little Nell is a 92-room ski-in, ski-out hotel at the foot of Aspen Mountain's Silver Queen Gondola, about 10 minutes from Aspen airport. It has held a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating for 30 consecutive years, and Element 47 keeps a cellar of 20,000 bottles. Aspen Mountain plans to open on November 26, 2026 and close on April 18, 2027.
Best for: Skiers who want to walk out of the hotel and onto the gondola.
Good to know: Holiday weeks sell out early.
How to choose between a beach and a ski trip this winter
Think about who's coming. Beach resorts work for every age and fitness level. Ski trips suit groups where most people ski or want to learn.
Mind the calendar. Early-season snow is never certain, so January to March is the safest window for skiing. The Mexican Pacific and the Caribbean are dry and settled through the same months.
Book holidays early. Christmas and New Year sell out first at both beach and ski resorts.
Add a reason to go. Humpback whales are in Banderas Bay and off Hawaii from December to March, which turns a beach trip into a wildlife trip.
