Luxury family resorts in Mexico for every age

A family resort that works for a toddler doesn't always work for a 15-year-old. Families with children of different ages need more than a kids club: baby gear on arrival, a club for school-age children, somewhere teenagers actually want to go, and a beach where everyone can swim.

The six resorts below are ranked on how well they cover each of those ages. All of them are full-service luxury resorts with a supervised kids program, and most sit on a beach that's safe for swimming.

We ranked them on four things: the age range the kids club covers and whether it's included, provision for babies and teenagers, the beach, and independent ratings from the Michelin Guide, Forbes Travel Guide and AAA.

Parents get two Jack Nicklaus golf courses, including the Pacifico course's "Tail of the Whale" hole on a natural island green, and the 13-room Apuane Spa. The restaurants range from Dos Catrinas for Mexican food to Aramara for Asian. Our full review of Four Seasons Punta Mita covers the rooms and restaurants in more detail.

How to choose a luxury family resort in Mexico

  • Start with the youngest child. Most kids clubs start at four or five, so families with babies should look for a dedicated baby program like the one at Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita.

  • Then think about the oldest. Teenagers rarely want a kids club, so a separate teen space, such as The Container at Four Seasons Punta Mita or Escondite at Chileno Bay, makes a difference.

  • Ask about the beach. In Los Cabos especially, a named swimmable bay is worth looking for.

  • Check what's included. Some kids clubs are complimentary and some charge by the day, so ask before you book.
